When Mashable launched its TikTok channel, its only goals were to get weird. Much of the TikTok's content juggled between repurposed, longform content from Mashable's other channels, while segwaying into original content that poked fun at pop culture, technology, and video games.
I took part in the content direction of much of the TikTok channel; I capitalized on the virality of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, creating several pieces of content through a combination of animation and motion graphics, tracking, live shooting, and pushing the limitations of the game's actual mechanics.
These videos all comedically touched upon timely issues such as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, politics, and the very distinct visual identity and subculture around the game itself. Mashable's TikTok channel would go on to be a Webby Honoree for the Social Weird category in 2020.
